Embarking on a journey through Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with my latest podcast episode reveals an intricate world where diet intertwines with holistic well-being. This timeless practice, deeply rooted in ancient Chinese philosophy, emphasizes a balanced approach to life, especially through nutrition. The episode unfolds as a narrative that takes the listener through the importance of eating in alignment with the seasons and understanding the profound connection between food, our organs, and our emotions.
My guest, Clara Cohen, is an Acupuncturist/ TCM practitioner, educator and founder of Acupro Academy. Clara stresses that by syncing our dietary habits with the rhythm of nature, we support our body's natural cleansing and nourishing processes. She explains how the liver, correlated with the wood element and spring season, benefits from green and detoxifying foods. As we transition into summer, the focus shifts to the heart and fire element, encouraging the consumption of vibrant, joyful foods that resonate with the season's energy.
Further into the episode, Clara and I discuss the five elements and the corresponding spirits within the framework of TCM. They touch upon the ways emotional states such as anger and anxiety can manifest in physical symptoms, impacting organs like the liver and heart. The discussion then moves to the significance of prenatal and postnatal chi, exploring how early life conditions and adult lifestyle choices collectively shape our health trajectory.
And, of course, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to ask a personal question ‘What is up with bloating?!?’ Clara brings to light the common issue of bloating among women, discussing its causes and providing practical advice for managing this discomfort. I then ask about the one indulgence that many people, including myself, turn to and that is CHOCOLATE. Clara shares her insights on its health benefits, particularly its high magnesium content, which can alleviate symptoms experienced by women during menstruation.
I had such a fun and lively conversation with Clara. She has so much passion and knowledge about all things TCM that I must invite her back. The episode not only offers a wealth of knowledge but also serves as an invitation to adopt a more conscious relationship with food and oneself.
By intertwining ancient practices with modern lifestyles, this podcast episode promises listeners a transformative experience that goes beyond mere dietary changes. It invites us to explore Traditional Chinese Medicine's nutritional wisdom and to savor our health.
