The Winter Solstice marks the longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere. This year it’s on December 21st. It is a turning point, signifying the rebirth of the Sun and the return of light. It is a perfect time to reflect on the past year and release the energies before we settle in for winter.

It is from darkness that inspiration emerges. It is in darkness that our inner light is lit. It is in slowing down and pausing where we can shift out attention from the external to our internal awareness. To give ourselves space to just be. To clear the clutter that can accumulate and discard unnecessary items.

I’ve always found the winter, especially right before the new year when I go through the house and discard items. I clear my physical 'space' - the decorations, the boxes that have accumulated from the shipped items, my pantry - getting rid of old food. I then clear the energy with Reiki. I want to feel a sense of ‘lightness’ before heading into the new year. The same ritual can be done internally but in a more reflective way - shedding light onto those things that may not serve us in the coming year. For example, perhaps we’re holding on to a grudge against someone, or a judgement about ourselves, or maybe we let our positive mindset just slip a bit. Maybe we placed our dreams on the shelf f while we adjusted to the shifts in our day-to-day due to Covid. Whatever it is, the energy around the Winter Solstice can shed light on those things that we need to let go of.

On this day and throughout winter, we should make a conscious effort to increase the amount of light, positive thoughts and love that is in and around us. We do this by celebrating the power of our inner strength and guidance. By connecting to the internal gateway of our intuition we can harness what truly matters in our lives and let go of the things that don’t.

The Winter Solstice is the final seasonal movement of 2020. It isn’t about being inactive. It actually is the best time for us to clear the clutter before heading into the new year. By clearing the clutter we make space for creative energy to emerge. We create space to allow spirit to uncover and shed light on the gifts and talents that we have within.
